Versión para impresiónVersión en PDF

This summer the matanceros will be able to visit the Maya Lagoon, a protected area located nine kilometers from Matanzas city that has great values of the biological diversity of the territory and which is part of the Provincial System of Protected Areas. It was created in the year 2003 and it is administered by the Company for the Protection of the Flora and the Fauna of our province. It is a lake of about two kilometers.

Lizards belonging to Anolis genre (A. porcatus), an endemic species of Cuba outstand among the terrestrial fauna as well as the bayoyas, also endemic of Cuba.

Among the water and forest birds are the zarapicos, ducks, doves, wood pigeons, bijiritas and woodpeckers stand out. In the winter, this is one of the most significant localities for the refuge of the migratory birds that transit along the corridor from North America. Undoubtedly, the Maya Lagoon is a good option for those who love Nature. (Abel López Montes de Oca/Radio 26)
