President of Ireland arrives in Cuba

The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, arrived in Cuba today, February 15, and was received by Deputy Foreign Minister, Rogelio Sierra.

As part of his official visit to the country, the Irish President is scheduled to pay tribute to National Hero José Martí at the memorial erected in his honor, and hold official conversations with Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and Ministers of Cuba.

During his stay on the island, the European leader will participate in activities related to the 26th International Book Fair, and offer a key note speech at the capital’s San Geronimo University.

Higgins is also set to visit Peru and Colombia as part of his Latin American tour, the first to be made by an Irish President.
