The Foreign Ministry (MINREX) of the Republic of Cuba has reaffirmed today its pledge to guarantee with severity and seriousness the security for diplomatic corps accredited on the Caribbean island.
In a statement released on the nightly broadcast of the National Television News, MINREX reaffirmed that Cuba meets the obligations derived from 1961 Vienna Convention on International Relations.

Such an official document referred to the protection for the integrity of diplomatic officials and local ones in every embassy.

'The impeccable performance of our country in this area is internationally recognized, and Cuba is universally considered as a safe destination for foreign visitors and diplomats, including US citizens,' the statement said.

It states that on February 17, 2017, the embassy of the United States of America in Havana and the US Department of State reported to MINREX on alleged incidents affecting some of their officials as well as their family members.

Cuba seriously took this matter up and acted with speed and professionalism to throw some light on this situation, carrying out an in-depth, priority and urgent investigation ordered by the highest level of the Cuban government.

The US embassy in Cuba was proposed to share some information and MINREX suggested to establish cooperation between competent authorities of both nations, the text says.

Cuban authorities set up an inter-institutional committee of experts for analyzing the facts; extended and reinforced security and protection measures for the embassy, staff and diplomatic residences.

Likewise, new channels of direct communication between the US embassy and the Diplomatic Security Department were fitted out, according to the text.

In this context, on May 23, the US Department of State informed the Cuban Embassy in Washington the decision that two Cuban diplomats must leave the United States.

This, the statement stressed, led to a protest by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba for this unjustified and unfounded decision.

MINREX emphatically stated that Cuba has never allowed, nor will ever allow Cuban territory to be used for any action against accredited diplomatic officials or their relatives, with no exception.

It also reiterates its willingness to cooperate in order to elucidate this situation.
